Two hounds competed; Richards' Chasedown Estelle (Stella) and Foster's WTCh. Sherlock She's Magic (Chloë) to compete in this eight-hour cold stake. Saturday was very breezy on the Howardian Hills, but by the time the first line was walked at 1:30am the wind subsided and it remained calm for Stella who drew the first line. She completed the 2-mile line in around the hour, with a strong identification. By the time Chloë started, drizzle had settled in, and progress was slow. Norman was still nursing his shoulder, and it was down to Gail to handle. However, this duo, that had been so successful two weeks earlier, never really gained the momentum needed, despite marking the hedgerows nicely. Pushed on to the finish Chloë was pleased to see her line-walker, just over two hours after starting. For Brian Sands, the Judge, too much time was spent off both lines for him to be impressed adequately to award either hound this prestigious trophy. Hence for a second year, Colin had to take it back home, as a reminder of Thurlow's win in February 1998.

Below was the last of the Special Stakes for
hounds qualifying in 1997:
Held on Saturday 7th Feb.'98 on Pevensey Marshes, Sussex
Five hounds competed, after a cloudy night which kept the frost
at bay.
A cold breeze maintained what the Judge:
David Richards
described as a poor scenting day.
Despite this, he was able to award the trophy to
Avery's Ch. Robinswood Thurlow
and two certificates of merit:
Franks' Brumbies Eclipse
& Stendela's Millvery Renegade
Elin and David hosted a sumptious Summing-up to cap the day.
